Starr is small. The 2020 census counted 165 people inside town limits, on about a square mile and a half along SC 81 south of Anderson. SCIway says the place began as Twiggs and took the Starr Station name when the Savannah Valley Railroad came through. Most people with a Starr address live outside that line. The 29684 ZIP area holds about 5,900 people, and ACS 2024 figures from Census Reporter show 46 percent of its homes went up between 1980 and 1999, with only 4 percent built before 1960. Most of the work out here is around 1980s and 1990s houses spread across the countryside.
A Starr-area lawn is often a wide piece of ground in full sun, and sun is where bermudagrass does best. Clemson's Home and Garden Information Center lists common bermudagrass at 1 to 2 inches and says to remove no more than one-third of the grass height in a single mowing. Its bermudagrass sheet warns that a lawn in fast growth may need mowing twice a week to keep from scalping. Inland green-up can come as late as mid-May. In a dry stretch, like the seven short-rain months NOAA logged starting in September 2025, Clemson says to raise the cut.
Wind keeps adding work along the highways. NOAA's Storm Events Database logs trees down along Highway 187 south of Starr in August 2007, at the junction of 187 and 29 in June 2010, on Trotter and Travis roads in April 2012, and on Highway 81 near Starr in June 2015. In July 2023 it recorded numerous trees and large limbs down just east of Sadlers Creek State Park. Then Helene came through on September 27, 2024, and blew down thousands of trees across Anderson County, with gusts up to 70 mph and some reaching 80.
Getting rid of the pile is its own job out here. Anderson County's land-clearing landfill sits in Starr, on Roy Arnold Road, and takes brush, limbs and roots cut to length: 6 feet or shorter for pieces up to 18 inches wide, 2 feet for anything wider. Of the county's 16 convenience centers, its website marks only Slabtown, near Pendleton, as taking yard debris. Burning outside town limits means notifying the SC Forestry Commission first, burning vegetation only, clearing a firebreak and staying until the fire is out. In late March 2026, during the drought, a statewide burn ban stopped it entirely.

Yes. The town itself is a couple hundred people, but the 29684 ZIP area that shares its name holds about 5,900, mostly on country lots. Starr sits about nine miles from our Anderson base. We mow, edge, trim hedges and clean up rural yards the same way we handle a lawn in town. Tell us the road and roughly how much ground you have.
Outside town limits, South Carolina requires you to notify the Forestry Commission before burning yard debris. Burn only vegetation such as leaves, limbs and branches, clear a firebreak, and stay with the fire until it is completely safe. Burn bans override all of that: one ran statewide from late March 2026 during the drought. The other route is the county's Starr landfill, cut to length.
Clemson says fall is the best season to plant shrubs in South Carolina. Piedmont soils like Cecil change from sandy loam to firm red clay within about 8 inches, and Clemson warns that clay planting holes can glaze, so notch the sides and, in compacted ground, set the root ball 2 to 4 inches high. Compacted soil should be broken up, not just covered.
