Iva started out as Cook's Station. When the railroad found another Cook Station already on the line, a railroad worker suggested naming the town for Dr. Augustus Cook's daughter, Iva, the Anderson Observer reports. Its 20th century came from Jackson Mill, running by 1906 with roughly 200 workers, and about 200 homes went up around it. The mill closed in 1996, but the houses stayed. In town, 45 percent of homes date from before 1960 and the median one from 1965, by the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year estimates. The old Union Depot stood where the gazebo on the square is now.
Trees are part of how Iva sees itself. The town's 2009 comprehensive plan says Iva has many varieties of trees and has long taken part in Tree City USA, and it describes the town as relatively flat at about 710 feet. Old trees bring shade and a heavy leaf drop. Clemson's turf guide says every lawn grass grows best in full sun, that tall fescue and zoysia can get by on 4 to 6 hours of direct sun, and that grass in partial shade should be cut taller. Under a big shade tree, the mower deck goes up, not down.
Those trees also come down. NOAA's storm files list numerous trees blown down in the Iva area in September 2010, one onto a home in April 2011, several along East Broad Street in June 2015, and several across the town in May 2020. Outside town, a Crooked Creek tributary flooded in June 2004, took down trees and destroyed the bridge on Sam Turner Road. Iva handles limb and brush pickup with its own scheduled rounds. Council minutes from August 2020 describe one round that collected at twelve locations, and in May 2023 a member asked when the next one would come.
Tall grass has been on the council's agenda lately. Members raised properties with tall grass at the June 22 and July 20, 2026 meetings, and in September 2025 one asked about grass and weeds at the former Jackson Mill site. On August 3, 2026, council passed the 2021 International Property Maintenance Code on final reading, 3 to 0. Past the town line, the 29655 ZIP area holds about 7,555 people, and 39 percent of its housing dates from 1980 through 1999, out in the lake country the plan calls a gateway to Hartwell, Russell, Secession and Thurmond.

Yes. On August 3, 2026, council adopted the 2021 International Property Maintenance Code, after members raised tall grass complaints that summer and the mayor said police can treat them as ordinance violations. The exact height Iva set is not posted online, so check with Town Hall. A steady mowing schedule keeps a lawn far below any limit.
Clemson says fine mulches should be no more than 2 to 3 inches deep, kept 2 to 3 inches away from the stems of woody plants. Pine needles interlock and stay in place, and pine straw or bark lasts about 2 to 4 years before it needs topping up. Stone like river rock is permanent, but Clemson warns it heats up in summer and should not surround acid-loving plants.
Iva runs its own limb and brush pickups in scheduled rounds. Council minutes from August 2020 describe one round that collected at twelve locations, and in May 2023 a council member asked when the next pickup would be. Between rounds, limbs sit where they fell, so a cleanup that clears them off the lawn lets the mowing go on as usual.
