Edging & Trimming

The edges are what make a lawn look finished.

A lawn can be cut at the right height and still look untidy if grass hangs over the driveway and creeps into the beds. Where bermudagrass is part of the lawn, it is usually the reason. Clemson Extension describes it spreading very rapidly by runners above the ground and below it, and says those runners are hard to control in flowerbeds, walks and borders. Give it one season without an edger and a curved bed line can vanish under a mat of grass. Regular edging is how the line stays where you want it.

We cut a clean vertical edge along driveways, sidewalks and curbs, and re-cut the curve between lawn and bed so the shape holds. Then the string trimmer goes everywhere the mower cannot: around trees, fence posts and mailboxes, along the foundation, beside the steps and around the air conditioner pad. Trimmed grass is taken down to the same height as the mowed lawn next to it, not scalped to bare dirt. Anything the edger and trimmer throw onto the concrete gets blown off before we pack up.

A cut edge also helps the bed behind it. Clemson's mulch guide says fine mulch should sit 2 to 3 inches deep and stay 2 to 3 inches back from the stems of woody plants, and a crisp edge gives that layer a lip to rest against instead of spilling into the grass. On sloped ground that matters more. The South Carolina Encyclopedia notes that the red clay soils of the Piedmont take in water poorly, which leads to fast runoff and erosion, and loose mulch is the first thing a hard rain carries off.

07 / FAQ

Edging & Trimming questions, answered.

During the growing season, most yards stay sharp with edging on every mowing visit or every other one. Fast-spreading grass like bermudagrass pushes over hard edges and into beds, and Clemson Extension notes its runners are hard to control there. Keeping up with it is much easier than cutting a lost edge back out later.

Yes. We find the old line, cut it back in with a clean vertical edge and pull out the grass that has crept into the bed. If you would like a new shape, such as a wider curve around a tree, we can cut that instead. After that it only needs a touch-up on regular visits.

Yes. If you like mowing your own lawn, we can come out just for the detail work: edges, trimming and blowing off the hard surfaces. That can be on a regular schedule or a single visit when the yard needs it. Call (864) 540-5167 and tell us what you need.
