Belton was chartered in 1855, soon after the Columbia and Greenville Railroad came through, and the city still calls the Standpipe its symbol. That 155-foot concrete water tower went up in 1908 and 1909, one block east of the business district, and has been on the National Register since 1987. The brick depot from about 1910 sits on the west side of the Public Square and now holds the Ruth Drake Museum and the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame. The city's own About page names Brown Avenue as one of the historic residential streets within walking distance of the square.
The houses here are old. Census Reporter's ACS 2024 numbers put Belton's median year built at 1957, with 58 percent of homes from before 1960 and only 7 percent from 2000 or later. On lots that age, foundation shrubs and bed lines have had decades to grow out of shape. Bermudagrass is part of that. Clemson Extension's bermudagrass factsheet says its runners are very difficult to control in flowerbeds, walks and borders, which is why a clean edge matters. Clemson puts centipede at 1.5 to 2 inches and notes it struggles in heavy, poorly drained clay.
Belton has a rule worth knowing before you hire anyone for yard work. The city's brush, leaf and limb flyer, citing City Code 42-22, says brush and yard waste from commercial tree and landscaping services must be disposed of by the company and not left for city collection. So if we trim your hedges or clear out your beds, those clippings are ours to deal with, not the city truck's. Your own yard waste is different: the same flyer asks homeowners to set brush where the garbage is collected, preferably at the curb, and to leave room for the tractor to scoop the leaves.
The city truck has its limits. The flyer rules out limbs more than 4 inches thick or longer than 15 feet, stumps with root balls, and bamboo over 8 feet, and it asks that no brush be stacked against trees, fences or poles, or left where rain can wash it into a storm drain. Storms test those rules. NOAA logged large limbs down along Highway 247 on the east side of town in August 2011, two trees down on Oneal Street in April 2012, and trees and power lines down across the city on July 18, 2024. Clamp Drive flooded near Hencoop Creek in August 2013.

The crew does. Belton's brush, leaf and limb flyer cites City Code 42-22: brush and yard waste from commercial tree and landscaping services must be disposed of by the company, not left for the city to collect. The city tells homeowners to make sure hauling the debris away is part of the deal before anyone starts cutting, so ask that question up front.
Leaves and grass clippings can go out with your limbs and other brush. Set it where your garbage is collected, but not with the garbage, preferably at the curb, and put it out before the first day the trucks are scheduled in your area. Skip limbs over 4 inches thick or 15 feet long, stumps with root balls, and bamboo over 8 feet.
It depends on the grass. Clemson lists centipede at 1.5 to 2 inches, common bermudagrass and zoysia at 1 to 2 inches, and tall fescue at 3 to 3.5 inches in summer. Whatever the grass, take no more than a third of the blade at a time. Clemson also notes a dull blade browns the leaf where it hits, so sharp blades matter.
