Townville is not a town on paper. It is an unincorporated community on SC 24 in Anderson County, about 15 miles from our base in Anderson, with a post office that opened in December 1836. The Census keeps no count for Townville itself, so the honest numbers come from the 29689 ZIP area: about 4,000 people, 89 percent of occupied homes owned, and a median build year of 1992, according to the 2024 five-year American Community Survey on Census Reporter. Those figures also count several hundred homes held for seasonal or occasional use, the weekend and lake places whose grass keeps growing while the owners are away.
Lake Hartwell shapes plenty of yards out here, and the shoreline comes with federal rules. In 2022 the Corps of Engineers told local media it was seeing an unprecedented increase in property owners illegally removing trees and vegetation along the lake, and that penalties can include fines and the loss of shoreline use permits for docks. In some cases the Corps grants qualifying adjacent owners a permit for limited cutting of understory growth. Before anything gets cut on the lake side of a lot, it pays to know where Corps land starts and what your permit allows.
NOAA's storm records here read like a road map. Trees and large limbs came down around Chicoma Drive in May 2011, with at least one tree on a house, and a tree fell at Hattons Ford Road and Pine Circle in August 2015. In January 2020 a brief tornado uprooted trees near Little Beaverdam Creek and lifted just south of the center of Townville, while downbursts blew down trees from Ramage Road across Highway 24 to Circle Drive and Conneross Road on the lake. More trees fell on Hopkins Road in February 2024, months before Helene.
With no town government, county rules decide where the brush goes. Anderson County lists only its Slabtown center in Pendleton as accepting yard debris, not the Townville convenience center on Simmons Ford Road. Burning a pile out here means notifying the SC Forestry Commission first, clearing a firebreak and staying with the fire until it is out. On sloped ground, Clemson Extension notes that pine needles interlock and stay put better than most mulches, and that centipedegrass on shaded north-facing slopes often suffers winter kill.

Only on land you control. Much of the shoreline is managed by the Corps of Engineers, which has said illegal cutting can bring fines and the loss of dock permits. Qualifying adjacent owners can sometimes get a permit for limited understory cutting. Check your property line and any permit you hold first, and we will work within it.
There is no town government, so there is no town pickup. Anderson County runs a convenience center on Simmons Ford Road, but the county's list shows only the Slabtown center in Pendleton as accepting yard debris. If you plan to burn a pile instead, the SC Forestry Commission requires notice before any yard debris burn outside town limits.
Yes. A regular mowing and trimming schedule keeps the grass from getting ahead of you between visits. Clemson Extension puts centipedegrass at 1.5 to 2 inches and common bermudagrass at 1 to 2 inches, with no more than a third of the blade cut at once, and that is hard to hold when a lawn waits two or three weeks.
